Social Networking is like a Sexual Orgy

so…

I’m fairly confident that “social networking” and “social marketing” will ultimately find credibility in our lives, and hopefully in my life-time. I do believe the cloud (all great things begin heavenward, do they not?) will host our greatest Thought Leadership. however, behind all great Thought Leadership we need subject-matter-expertise – informed decision making – to sustain and execute it.

that said, I’m reasonably convinced that my choice of wording for the subject heading of this post will raise eye-brows, significantly.

I have issues, to be certain. a genuine bug up my butt, if you will, when it comes to social networking, for example.

just like an orgy, social networking is (currently) shallow. we don’t really know much about the people with whom we are connecting to.  yet, we are investing a great deal of ourselves in them, and generally making big decisions. or, we aren’t making enough of an investment in that crowd and making decisions and taking actions based on shallow information and thinking. I had a fifty-seven year old Coaching client inform me yesterday that he has a Linkedin profile because of peer pressure. I asked him if he was fifteen. then it occurred to me that his situational awareness around all of this is like that of a fifteen year old facing a Board of Directors (read, Where do you fit in today’s Business?, for perspective)

run with me, here. what about informed decision-making? What are we consenting to?

its juxtapositional, by definition. and, that means its either good or bad with a paradigm at stake.

but, it’s all about awareness.

that’s my role in your lives. that’s me being the Heterodox (it’s been awhile since I’ve used that term), and a Jeffersonian Heterodox, at that. I value the story, possibly the tradition, but I question everything relentlessly until I come to my irrefutable conclusion. today, the social platform is a long ways off from being the solution – just like empty sex is certainly no way solve our human needs. we need meaningful connectivity to thrive, make better decisions, be healthy, and to be part of the Solution.

Food for thought… If DATA is the new oil, what if we are the refinery? now what?

perhaps a great example of this is “crowd funding”. this is a direct result of the crowd sourcing efforts spawned by the advent of social networking and mobile technology. we want it all to work; to make life simpler, if not easy.

ponder this…

statistically (and, I’m referencing work we’ve done through www.briancork.com and www.brianthebusinesscoach.com – with our endless polling and research), if you are a decision-maker under thirty six you are entering your power-band years towards influence. and, you are, or want to, make quick decisions on mobile devices based on quick bursts of shallow DATA and information often garnered through some form of mass hysteria, crowd sourced, motley crowds, rabble group thinking (i.e. google+1, Linkedin, Facebook, etc). hey… is there a correlation in that that Facebook  is attached somehow seventy-two percent (72%) of all divorces, yet Linkedin does not have a “divorced” box you can check or form a group around?

people that want to skirt certain rules and regulations and/ or don’t meet qualified investor standards are using this process to side-step accountability and then responsibility. people funding Kickstarter projects for example might as well hand their money to strangers in bathroom at night clubs.

good may come, yet. just be responsible. think. think.

outside the Inside

I found myself offering the following bon mot to a younger fellow in my community based on something of a repartee we’ve found ourselves engaged around:

Keep looking inside. Eventually you will start to recognize what others see from the outside, and your perspective makes more sense to the majority. that makes you relevant.

I get to coach so many people across the four seasons of life that I’m fortunate enough to be constantly reminded that few of us can rest on laurels, or get too relaxed about our critical roles in life.

I had Haley Anne leaning on my shoulder while I was tapping that message into existence. she’s had a tough week with a cyber bully from another school. I’ll discuss this more later, but I despise Facebook all the more, and a lot of the social networking platforms available are simply dangerous platforms from which evil can launch all manner of assault. Haley Anne needed her Daddy. and, we are getting ready to start driving lessons. …wow…

in any event, she read the message aloud a few times and finally rewarded me with:

okay… the more you read that it actually makes sense.

I think it helps that we’ve had a running dialogue, whether she realized it or not, over the past few months about perspective, and what it means. it can be a trying concept. but, it’s foundational. and, it makes my point, here. the fellow referenced above is now over thirty. Haley Anne just shy of fifteen. I’ll be one hundred years old in fifty years.

I have a lot to both learn, and teach. and, I really do need to keep thinking from all the angles.

So… I don’t know how many of you use LinkedIN. As it turns out, I do. And, we average two new clients a month that we can directly attribute to the business network. So, I’ll take the position it’s worth the fifty dollars we pay for the extra inMail capability.

Recently I was looking for a Subject Matter Expert (“SME”), and I found a good one on LinkedIN. But, my inMail went unanswered for several weeks until his wife, who was rummaging around on his laptop, and just happened to stumble upon the link herself, advised me that her husband was deceased. That all struck me as a bit creepy. So… It’s rather unsettling to realize that, over the course of time, more and more profiles will be a lingering memory of people that are deceased. So… You can really see dead people on LinkedIN.

In the cases of the lonely or unattached, who would know to remove the profile? Who will police that?

By the way… I was meeting with a gen-something (who really cares?) upon the request of a friend (it was his son). The young lad was twenty three and a recent graduate of Georgia. He confidently advised me that he was a social media expert (seriously). When I inquired about business context, he actually waved me off and told me that did not matter in business these days. I almost gagged on the irony (and, didn’t even need a spoon).

…oh… And, he told me LinkedIN is dead.

…he’s also unemployed, with few prospects.

…which reminds me… It’s amaz­ing how the only day most people use LinkedIN is the day they lose a job.
