Brian Patrick Cork is living the Authentic Life

brian cork, blogs, sex, Life, and stuff

September18

the title of this particular post is misleading.

I won’t be discussing sex. in fact, Joanne (my wife) just looked over my shoulder and was a bit alarmed by the reference to “sex”. in fact, it’s another experiment around Search Engine Optimization (SEO) [fascinating, gripping stuff]. by simply adding words like “sex” (even the word: “butt”), or my name (seriously) to a subject line and then in the opening paragraphs of a blog post can increase viewership dramatically.

so… you are had, in a manner of speaking.

meanwhile, as I approach my more salient point, here, I’ll reveal that I was recently asked how and why my blog has become so widely read. they could hardly conceal their irritation.

the timing for this missive is likely good because I recently ruffled feathers around another recent post: the distortion field of social media and marketing and it’s impact on networking. I was also interviewed by Malcolm Teasdale for his Malcolm Out Loud show not long ago – and more recently by the Wall Street Journal and Forbes Magazine, the latter with something to do about being a “king-maker”. that might not make much sense either. however, on that show, those media points, as with this blog, questions are asked; statements made. a platform for fist-shaking is thusly created. and more often than not, solutions gleefully championed.

it’s not that I’m an award winning blogger. I’m simply followed by a lot of people that are apparently interested in me, what I do, say, and possibly think.

I’ll amicably submit that it’s possible they just like the videos and music I actualize, periodically. I also use words in interesting ways to help me draw correlations in-and-amongst world events. everything, everything, I tell you, is connected. and, I strive to prove it diligently on this blog – and, almost daily.

nonetheless, with that question, I’ll take the firm position that I’m stumped. usually, I am not without an answer. most of the time, any answer is better than no answer at all. one must simply be able to defend a point. NOTE: there is nothing stupider sounding (less so, transparent) than someone saying, “I don’t know.” also, it suggests you have no ability to think on your feet. I can do that. I’m actually quite good at it.

So, how did I end up being a widely-read blogger?

we did a bit of research. in fact, we did more than that… we did a LOT of research. see.. that’s a significant element to who and what I am. I try to know and relate to a great many things. I think about what is happening in the world, and take it oh so seriously. my Nana said I was a, “deep thinker”. maybe that’s the case. but, more likely I care deeply (endlessly). my passion and commitment to people around me (in an ever-growing circle) is fueled by reserves that could possibly keep the earth spinning on it’s very axis.

here are a few tips:

I like to write.

and, it does not hurt that the title of my blog is a witty twist around my surname. I’ve had heady victories in my day, with more to follow, I’m certain. but. I’ve also had my ass severely kicked. I suspect my daughters take the former for granted. my friends and business partners certainly do, by example. but, it’s the manner in which I work hard to manage the scary challenges is how I want my daughters to understand me. character is often best when tested, eh.

that said, if you decide to write a blog about how toilet paper gets made, you might not get an award or get read very often.

unfortunately, just because you can write doesn’t mean you should. Pretty much everyone can write. Except for the illiterate, of course. think about that.

just so we are clear, I think Mary Guthrie should fire up a blog and talk about her family and co-workers. I don’t book mark much of anything. but, I would subscribe to her stories about her Irish-influenced family.

the point is, it helps if you can write well. if you can’t, take a night class once a week at the local junior college. pick up a copy of Finnegans Wake and grind your way through it. I’d prefer you to read Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, mind you. more on that later, especially with a movie on it’s way.

that said, I’m not claiming to write well. I simply write interesting.

In blogging, all you have is words, and if your words can’t. don’t or won’t resonate, your blog suffocates. and, if your blog is stagnate, nobody will read your thoughts because nobody likes reading a blog that sucks.

can you imagine foreigners (or extra terrestrials) that might read writing such as my own and become confused by the utilization of the English language? just ponder the word, “sucks” and it’s multiple uses.

I make blogging sound easier said than done, right? well, hell, it’s part of my life’s mission to make easy seems appear difficult, and herculean things seems simple. that’s my nature. I don’t look for “easy buttons”. I just know where they are. I’m no leperchaun. but, people read my blog.

but here is the truth. If you just write random stuff and post it to your blog, your friends will read it, and your wife (okay… not mine, so much), or husband, or whatever will read it, and nobody else will. then you’ll have, like, one hundred readers a month (according to WordPress that’s about average), and you’ll be like, Why, God, did I start a blog? I hate blogging! Blogging sucks. then you’ll stop blogging because your blog only confirms your deepest fear about yourself, about life, about humanity:

nobody cares what you have to say, or do.

essentially, you have to express an intelligent opinion (facts help) in an interesting way about stuff people care about. maybe that’s Wikileaks. perhaps urban farming. but, you have to write about what you genuinely care about, not some drivel that you think other people will care about.

blogging reality: whatever you think potential readers will or should care about, they won’t. and, whatever you think they won’t care about, they likely will. the latter part of that thinking is possibly the key, here. we, that collective (the what?) we, don’t understand how important everyone, everywhere, really is. so, we don’t value ourselves enough to work daily to be change agents or interesting. well… I do. I take enormous (calculated) risks each and every day.

more on that last bit, later.

peace be to my Brothers and Sisters.

are search results a glowing example of a life well lived?

April14

so…

social media has obviously changed our lives, collectively. and, we are constantly being exposed to tools we did not know we could not live without until they were part of our daily existence (like Apple products).

blogging, as it turns out, is a terrific tool, of sorts, and is part of my own life. and, I use the WordPress platform for a wide-variety of reasons that include a lot of options like plugins that make the process more challenging for myself and interesting for you. however, one of the reasons is not the unique analytics offered on the dashboard (or, backend) of user accounts.

I like to research and write, and don’t care about the associated data generated by analytics.

but, those analytics are tools, in their own right that people use to make all manner of decisions in their own lives. the results can be as uncertain, revealing, or possibly deceiving (and entertaining) as the effort, itself.

“analytics” have made our social-media-driven lives “Chines Interesting”.

for example, part of the WordPress dashboard analytics involves a summary of terms people from around the world use to find information. they might be looking for a specific person, a historical event, pictures, or stories. the sort of information can be revealing about our local and global culture. and, it’s not difficult to discern how outsiders might think of a target of search, such as myself.

from a ego-centric point-of-view, I thought the following Search Engine Terms results (ranked from most hits to least hits) might be of interest to my readers. these particular results are from a random day late last week that might say a few things about what people think of me, are looking for, finding, or think they are finding (like: “brain cock”). I’ve not picked one over the another. and, all I did was cut-and-paste that days unique results. NOTE: the post template made the positioning of the data a bit “wonky”, (a decidedly English term). but, the data is what it is. my “home page” had 3,935 unique hits as of 1130 hours that morning. although, to be clear, I’m not certain how this arcane science, of a sort, actually works.

by the way, one term or set of terms that caught my attention were those reflective of the hapless Vanessa Hudgens (naked), and how much of this continues to make and validate my original points postulated in my prior posts: vanessa hudgens gets sucker punched naked, and, the word naked is good for something but not for me. oh, and possibly, brian cork is ironically Stupid.

the word naked is good for something but not for me

March24

last week in my blog-post-test vanessa hudgens gets sucker punched naked, I postulated that tags like “naked” and “punched” might further increase attention to my blog. I think I was looking for something along the lines of a social commentary.

I don’t even enjoy that sort of gratuitous tomfoolery. but, dammit, I did get a lot more hits. and that has been sustained, and is growing over the past week, and daily.

by the way… there are also a lot of people interested in Rhodesian Ridgebacks, as well.

that sort of bugs me (the naked angle, not Ridgebacks). no… it bothers me a lot, the more I think about it. I’d like to think I’m more interesting and relevant than that. although to be fair to myself, my readers consistently appear to like my views when it come to analyzing market trends and offering insights into the thought leaders in companies like Apple and Google. and, extreme-training tips. and, my dog Rowdy (“Ridgebacks” get a lot of hits). so, I’m also realizing that I probably made my point in that “one-off” readers are finding my blog because they are googling or searching for tag words like “naked”. and, to my horor, if you google “naked chicks on sucker punch”, “girl from sucker punch naked” or, “vanessa hudgens naked”, you are inauspiciously led to my site because I get so much traffic, in general.

so, I just ended up becoming part of the problem.

that really, really bugs me.

the worst mistake you can make is the one you repeat.

and, another think that bugs me is I did something similar to this about three years ago with my ill-fated myspace experiment. I was pretty clear that I’m happily married and not interested in “hooking up” with women. yet, I was enundated by (unconsummated) contacts from women in Alpharetta and Atlanta (both married, and not) wanting to do that very thing.

so, it looks like I’m ranting and complaining my way through something of a social commentary, here. I understand I am actually getting what I, inadvertently, asked for.

evidently there are many people that like to read this blog and connect with me as I “nakedly”, in a manner of speaking, bare my soul. and, there are a whole bunch more that just like to see something naked without having to make an actual connection.

I know one day Haley Anne and Emma Jo are going to understand that their Dad is a deeply flawed man whose best contribution to his society – is them. they will possibly read this blog, if it survives. but, I’m hopeful they will have learned perspective along the way.

peace be to my Brothers and Sisters.

vanessa hudgens gets sucker punched naked

March17

I meant for this post title to be provocative.

just like the story below is meant to be stupid and misleading. we, collectively, should expect naught else from actors with low self-esteem and media that feeds the assinine frenzie.

New photos of VANESSA HUDGENS, which appear to show the actress completely naked, have leaked online.

it’s both amazing from a process perspective, and as a commentary on our society, that words like “naked” and “punched” generate big numbers when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (“SEO”). in fact, I’ll tag this post with both words and be curious to see how many hits I get.

A third set of nude snaps, allegedly featuring Hudgens, were published on various websites on Tuesday morning.

The High School Musical star’s good girl image was first tarnished in 2007 when provocative pictures of Hudgens first appeared online. Last year, Hudgens was left red-faced again when new snaps circulated on the web.

Sources say whoever leaked the photos this time is trying to sabotage the star’s career. The untimely scandal arrives two weeks after Hudgens’ film Beastly hit U.S. theatres March 4th, and just before her next movie release, Sucker Punch, hits U.S. theatres on March 25th.

so… inching forward, this post might not be taking form like you want to expect.

my eight year old, Emma Jo, saw an advertisement for Beastly and recognized that it was, indeed similar to Beauty and the Beast. she reminded me that the “beauty” was lucky because the “beast” “…is a good dancer…”

I doubt either Emma Jo, or myself will actually see Beastly. but, I’m hopeful Ms. Hudgens gives the retelling of a solid parable a worthy effort. the choice of direction for her career, in that regard is more promising than troubling.

I’m not so sure about Sucker Punch, though. it’s writer, Zack Snyder has described the film as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, including dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels. the imagery is rather stylized like The 300 (the ultimate guy film), and Watchmen. I want to see Sucker Punch, but not because of Hudgens. I want to see dragons, derigibles, zombies, explosions and Scott Glenn being a wise man (with both a samarai sword, and a straight face).

I’m skeptical that someone wants to “sabotage” the movie career of Hudgens – unless that “someone” is herself. she had to pose for those naked pictures right? she also had to be hanging out with “someone” that took the pictures, had the power, and lack of character, to post those pictures on the internet. and, she had to consciously choose not to learn some form of lesson from the first time all this occurred back in 2007.

or, maybe she did learn a lesson. those pictures of her nude are excellent advertisements for, what might be, provocative story-lines and content in both the up-coming movies. if she follows the career advice of other self-flaggelating actresses like Paris Hilton, no PR is bad PR, eh.

my challenge remains to try and keep my own daughters focused on a different path. Haley Anne, at fourteen, sees young women like Hudgens making a lot of money, wearing gorgeous clothes and dating Zak Efron, and the only trade-off is a decidedly different kind of character development than preparing for a movie. to be fair, it’s feasible that Ms. Hudgens can separate her person from her public personnae, and the internet exploitation is rationalized as being only business. but, I wonder what she is going to tell her own kids when they Google her.

I knew Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man) back when we were both kids and in our mid-twenties. I was more often than not surfing and playing volley ball off the strand in Hermosa Beach, California and he was already making “interesting” moves both on-and-off screen. but, he was clear with his objective to laugh all the way to the bank. somehow, it’s all different when it comes to girls. so, I write about these things that weigh on my heart, shoulders and sense of responsibility as a citizen and father.

I’m also torn in business this week. I just helped one young entrepreneur secure seven million dollars ($7M) for a venture, rallied a long-time investor and friend of mine, Jack, to keep up the good fight even though young people are disappointing him everywhere he turns, and I just got punked by a young, eighteen-year-old entrepreneur I took a HUGE chance with my local reputation on the line. after only thirty days of coaching, he told me his team really only wanted me “…for my rolodex”, I was “slowing him down”, “things were not going as fas as he thought they should”, and, “…if [he] needed business advice he would go to his Dad (who has never been involved with start-ups in his, otherwise, storied career)”. I still think he is a good kid, and we have to be allowed to make mistakes. I’ve made some (really) big ones, despite great mentors. but, it’s only Thursday, and this has been a really whacky week.

I am really looking forward to soccer practice tonight with my U10 Shockers and the U14 Breakers (that’s another story I’m trying to get straight in my head). however, God is all over all of these touch-points.

I find myself searching for baring points. and, maybe I can’t help everyone (well… I actually, probably can, and do. some times some people just don’t like what they hear). many people are going to become great examples of Laws of Natural Selection. he’s certainly sucker punched himself. perhaps that is what what God is telling me through one humbling episode while also getting an opportunity to be taught other lessons by my Emma Jo, Jack and another young man who is making me (and hopefully his investor, proud) in terms of perspective.

I’ve long maintained that God’s greatest gift to us is discernment. I don’t want to debate the Christ element. whether He rose from the dead or not, his example remains “the gift that keeps on giving”. but, discernment allows for perspective and offers a foundation. and, in my case I’m thinking “example”.

I am determined to do my best work with anything and everything I do. it’s the vital difference between being pleased, and being satisfied. often the difference between success and failure. people from around the world seek my guidance. I can’t help people that won’t help themselves. Ms. Hudgens is an example of what I don’t want my daughters to be. one way or another that young entrepreneur is going to be an example of something, and it will be a lesson for many other people I work with over the next seventy years (I expect to find myself, at one hundred and twenty (120) years of age sitting outside of a Starbucks in China guiding some young champion. one day he’ll be annoyed because I fell asleep with an venti ice chai in my hand. but, I’ve actually faded to black – but, doing the thing  love almost as much as I do my daughters – helping great people make good decisions). I intend to be an example and baring point for my family, friends any generation of people that want or need a beacon.

why me, you ask?

I’ll let God sort that out. He gave me the tools, and the will and discernment to use them. I’m no ark. but, I believe in a covenant with everyone around me.

peace be to my Brothers and Sisters.

What’s All This About?

"What am I looking at?", you might wonder.

Lots of stuff.

Meanwhile, here, I discuss events, people and things in our world - and, my (hardly simplistic, albeit inarticulate) views around them.

You'll also learn things about, well, things, like people you need to know about, and information about companies you can't find anywhere else.

So, while I harangue the public in my not so gentle way, you will discover that I am fascinated by all things arcane, curious about those whom appear religious, love music, dabble in politics, loathe the media, value education, still think I am an athlete, and might offer a recipe.

All the while, striving mightily, and daily, to remain a prudent and optimistic gentleman - and, authentic.
